From February 10-12, 2025, I had the privilege of attending APTLD87 in Hong Kong, an event that brought together ccTLD operators, industry leaders, and cybersecurity experts from across the Asia-Pacific region. As always, APTLD provided an incredible platform for learning, networking, and engaging in discussions that are shaping the future of the domain name system (DNS).
My Experience at APTLD87
Throughout the event, I participated in various technical training sessions, policy discussions, and interactive workshops. The topics covered were extensive, ranging from DNS security and cyber resilience to the future of ccTLD governance. Each session was packed with insights, offering a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the domain industry.

One of the key aspects of APTLD meetings is the opportunity to engage with professionals who are actively shaping the industry. From sharing operational challenges to discussing regulatory changes, every conversation was a valuable learning experience.
Moderating Session 4B: Technical Protection from Fraud and Anti-Fraud Techniques
One of the highlights of my APTLD87 experience was moderating Session 4B – Technical Protection from Fraud and Anti-Fraud Techniques. As fraudsters continuously evolve their tactics, it is critical that we stay ahead by implementing advanced anti-fraud measures. Our session focused on practical strategies and technologies that can help domain registries and registrars enhance their security posture.
The session featured a panel of exceptional experts who shared their insights and experiences:
- Gheafany Widyatika Putri (.ID)
- Vadim Mikhailov (.RU/.РФ)
- Wibhashini De Silva (.LK)
- Alban Kwan (CSC)
- Sophia Feng (ZDNS)
Each panelist brought a unique perspective, from national registry-level anti-fraud measures to enterprise-level fraud detection and mitigation. We explored topics such as machine learning for fraud detection, real-time monitoring techniques, and global trends in domain fraud. The discussion was engaging, with attendees actively participating and sharing their challenges and strategies for keeping bad actors at bay.
Key Takeaways from the Session
- Fraudsters are becoming more sophisticated, requiring continuous adaptation of security measures.
- Proactive monitoring and AI-driven detection systems can significantly reduce fraud-related incidents.
- Collaboration between registries, registrars, and cybersecurity firms is essential to combat fraud effectively.
- Education and awareness within the industry play a crucial role in preventing fraudulent activities.
Looking Ahead
APTLD87 reinforced the importance of community-driven collaboration in strengthening DNS security and domain management best practices. As the domain industry evolves, so do the challenges we face. It’s crucial that we stay informed, adaptive, and proactive in mitigating risks.
I am grateful for the opportunity to moderate a session, engage with industry peers, and contribute to these important discussions. The knowledge gained from APTLD87 will certainly shape my approach toward enhancing security in domain operations and fostering stronger collaborations in the global domain community.
I look forward to continuing these conversations and contributing to future APTLD meetings. Until next time, let’s keep innovating and securing the DNS ecosystem together!
